Shara's Cancer Blog

I recently lost 10lb unintentionally.  I found out when I went to the doc for symptoms of bronchitis.  I was also having muscle weakness, short of breath and severe fatigue.  Turns out my thyroid meds were way too high since I lost weight.  I had a test to check for central adrenal insufficiency.  It came back low normal.  I have had less of an appetite, and I get full faster.  I had some tough days recently.  I've also been sick with a bronchitis like illness for a week now causing lots of coughing especially at night.  I cough up phlegm from clear, white, pale yellow, dark yellow, and green.  My throat started hurting yesterday when I swallow.  I'm really tired of all of this.  I'm assuming my lack of appetite and feeling full sooner caused the weight loss, but not sure what caused those things.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Shara! The bronchitis will do that, take away your appetite and make you feel full faster because of the inflammation in those two bronchi tubes. I had a bad cold that went into bronchitis at Christmas. Now I have darn cold back. Are you very tired also? That yellow, green phlegm means infection. They gave me z-pack (sp.?) two together on the first day then one per day for two days, strong stuff. This is a bad bad year for bronchitis. Stay in bed a couple days, could someone get the girls from school if Jason can't? The cough is much worse at night. My rheumatologist gave me an old fashioned Rx called Benzonotate Pearls, 100 mg.

My husband was gone 4/5 days this past week. I was barely surviving. I stayed home today while they went to my mother-in-law's house. I feel more rested today since I was able to sleep until 10am. I haven't had a fever, so I felt a doc visit would be a waste of time. My kids probably think I'm the worst mom alive since I've been so irritable and exhausted. 😔

Are you kidding? You're the best Mom and they know that! I didn't have a fever either. That's one positive. I know it's hard but the only way to beat it is to stay in. I just spent two full days in bed, ugh, I just washed my face and brushed my teeth and choked down Progress Noodle Soup and Lots of Boost. That's all. And today, I feel better.

They look like clear vitamin d gels. Got to swallow them quick because they dissolve fast and will make your mouth numb but they work great. Will make you woozy though. Don't forget too your girls are in school and kids bring everything home. This stuff takes a long time to go away. Plus I think we're more susceptible to all this sinus respiratory stuff. Also get your hemoglobin checked, maybe low on iron. I needed iron infusions in October. By the time I got to the top of the stairs you'd swear I was a smoker I'd be huffing and puffing from the low iron.

My hemoglobin was low in some recent blood work, but the endo didn't recommend anything. I'm a vegetarian, and it's been low before cancer treatment. I started a supplement, but not sure how much to take. I tried to make an appt. with my PC doc, but it's a year wait. I'm sick of doctors and everything else.

Thanks so much for your encouragement and suggestions. I actually got some sleep last night. I hope I continue to feel better. Unfortunately, my husband is leaving town again today. He'll be back tomorrow night, so at least it's a short trip. Thanks again. ❤

Muscle fibrosis

I am six years out from the end of chemo/radiation for stage IV NPC.  Lately, I have been having a lot of tight muscles in my middle to upper back and neck.  I am currently seeing a PT for some issue that caused pain when breathing in deeply, sneezing and coughing.  They have found several muscles that are tight and have knots in them.  I am wondering what others are doing  to slow the progression of muscle fibrosis.  I have read about deep friction massage.  If anyone has done this treatment, does it help?

Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Hi, I'm wondering if the muscle fibrosis, is from your radiation/chemo. If so it would explain most all of us that suffered with both; after effects.
I have done gentle massage; as deep anything can wreck you up. Anything that goes more than gentle, would have to be a growing confidence in the relationship with the professional, over time.
I'm glad you asked the question.
Looks like you had a rare cancer, with few bloggers. So sorry.
My cancer is rare, but there are a ton of people that respond if we have questions.
I hope more people eventually get back to you.
Thank you for your reply.
Happy birthday week!

Induction chemo with monoclonal antibody (cetuximab)

MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

Try hard to find things that taste okay so you can maintain your weight and swallowing during radiation to head and neck.

If you are religious - focus on your family and pray and remember God is always with you. If not religious - focus on your family and getting through it so you can continue to be in their lives.

Fullness in right ear, sinus headaches, tingling and numbness in upper right lip and cheek area near the nose, right side of tongue and right side of roof of mouth sensitive to salty and acidic foods

Started radiation on 11/4/13 after 6 weeks on induction chemo

Started cetuximab on 9/5/13 along with induction chemo as part of a clinical trial - skin rash on face, chest, back, and lower legs similar to acne (very painful), swollen lymph nodes which caused pain in the neck and back of head, severe itching, cracked corners of mouth that were extremely painful.
